Music Videos-Lady Gaga-A Million Reasons

Representation & Stereotypes

  • It is stereotypical that celebrities have makeup artists and posh dressing rooms.
  • It is both feminine and masculine with the suit but it being in pink. There is also makeup and hair being done which is feminine. The scenes of her in the suit are perhaps more real as she isn't a perfect woman.
  • It isn't stereotypical for the rest of the video to be with a blank background and just a guitar as there is usually much more going on.
Narrative

  • She tries to run away and is convinced to stay.
  • The video turns black and white to show the background of the bright star image. The guitar part is then in colour to show that this normal version of her is more real.
  • The present is the one reason to stay.
  • She appears to be in a relationship
Lady Gaga's Star Image

  • She's in a dressing room having her makeup done to be glamorous.
  • In the rest of the video she isn't presented so much as a star other than all of the attention she recieves.
  • The video almost shows that she is a construction as well as a real person. This perhaps presents to people how you can be both.
Background

  • She is known for outrageous things (the meat dress) but this album and song contrasts this. Perhaps showing the real her behind the construction.
  • Her name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. The song is on the album Joanne which gives a real piece of her.
  • She was inspired to do outrageous things as well as being musically influenced by Madonna, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and Micheal Jackson.
[Verse 1]
You're giving me a million reasons to let you go
You're giving me a million reasons to quit the show

You're givin' me a million reasons
Give me a million reasons
Givin' me a million reasons
About a million reasons

If I had a highway, I would run for the hills
If you could find a dry way, I'd forever be still

But you're giving me a million reasons
Give me a million reasons
Givin' me a million reasons
About a million reasons

[Chorus]
I bow down to pray
I try to make the worst seem better
Lord, show me the way

To cut through all his worn out leather
I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away
But baby, I just need one good one to stay

[Verse 2]
Head stuck in a cycle, I look off and I stare
It's like that I've stopped breathing, but completely aware

'Cause you're giving me a million reasons
Give me a million reasons
Givin' me a million reasons

About a million reasons

And if you say something that you might even mean
It's hard to even fathom which parts I should believe

'Cause you're giving me a million reasons
Give me a million reasons
Givin' me a million reasons
About a million reasons

[Chorus]
I bow down to pray
I try to make the worst seem better
Lord, show me the way

To cut through all his worn out leather
I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away
But baby, I just need one good one to stay

[Bridge]
Hey, ehh, ehh, eyy
Baby I'm bleedin', bleedin'
Stay, ehh, ehhy
Can't you give me what I'm needin', needin'
Every heartbreak makes it hard to keep the faith

But baby, I just need one good one
Good one, good one, good one, good one, good one

[Chorus]
When I bow down to pray
I try to make the worst seem better
Lord, show me the way

To cut through all his worn out leather
I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away
But baby, I just need one good one, good one
Tell me that you'll be the good one, good one
Baby, I just need one good one to stay

  • The song represents both an unstable relationship with a man and with fame.
  • The repetition shows the constant questioning of what's right and constant instability.
  • 'I try to make the worst seem better' shows how she tries to look at thing optimistically and positively and still has a million reasons.
  • The worn out leather represents her repetitive struggles and problems with men.
  • The one good reason could represent her fans in the music industry or something in a romantic relationship.
  • The 'head stuck in a cycle//but completely aware' lyric shows how she knows the damage that's being done but still wants to stay for one reason. This could also reference when she was raped when she was 19.
  • The song is about her ex-fiance Taylor Kinney. The song represents how they weren't at all compatible and her career didn't work with the relationship even though she still loved him and wanted the relationship.

How is Lady Gaga represented as a female in the video? Focus on how Mise en Scene has been used to achieve specific representation.
Plan

  • pink suit
  • makeup but wants to 'quit the show'
  • black and white to colour-shows what a real woman is

In the video 'A Million Reasons' by Lady Gaga, she is presented in a pink suit and cowboy hat. The use of the colour pink has very stereotypically feminine connotations and perhaps shows that Lady Gaga wants to be feminine and sees nothing wrong with it. Although, she is in suit which is usually associated with businessmen, this could show how, despite being feminine, she can still be as strong as any businessman. The 'cowboy' hat also has masculinity in the name, so Lady Gaga might be trying to show that she can be as bad as a
